IMC project selected for funding from the International Fund for Cultural Diversity

2014-BANNER 1-anniversary-magenta-EN-RSZDParis, December 10, 2014 - A funding application for the project "Empowering African youth to harness the potential of the music sector as enabler and driver of development" submitted by the IMC to the UNESCO International Fund for Cultural Diversity has been approved today by the 8th Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.

The project aims to provide young African musicians and music professionals with opportunities and efficient tools for them to become the next generation of agents of the diversity of musical expressions in Africa as well as strong advocates of the role of culture as driver and enabler of development. Special attention will be given to empowering young women as long- and short-term internships, study visits and work placements are put in place with a view to initiating collaborations that can serve as models for future public-private and South-South cooperation projects.

The proposed activities include aspects of the African Music Development Programme (AMDP) which aims to build a sustainable music sector in Africa emphasizing employment opportunities. This 3-year IMC-led cooperation project benefits from the financial contribution of the European Union and the assistance of the ACP Group of States and is implemented with partners in 8 countries. The contribution from the IFCD will allow the IMC not only to reinforce specific youth-targeted training activities of the AMDP, but also to create for the 150+ direct beneficiaries further opportunities for sharing and learning by involving additional partners in more countries, which will ensure a greater sustainability of the entire action.
