Students from Turkey, Brazil, Germany, and Sweden were offered the opportunity to acquire insight in the daily work of the Secretariats of international music organisations such as the International Music Council, the European Music Council and the European Union of Music Competitions for Youth (EMCY) in Paris, Bonn and Munich.

   

MEGY capacity-building workshop for young music professionals

The aim of the workshop was to develop a structure for youth participation within the IMC and to offer capacity building in terms of international networking and communication to young professionals in music. Participants learned about the mechanisms of international cultural networks, about youth participation and they will get the opportunity to meet experienced professionals as well as other young people from all over the world.

Also, the future strategy, structure and activities of the Youth Advisory Group was discussed. Please find the programme of this event here.

World Forum on Music: youth led conference sessions
During the IMC World Forum on Music in September 2011 in Tallinn at least 50 participants under the age of 30 were present among over 300 cultural operators from all continents. The overall theme was “Music and Social Change”. the IMC Youth Advisory Group (YAG) was actively involved in shaping the Forum programme and organised the following interactive sessions:

Hip Hop as a Tool for social change  
Make some noise for the Manifesto and Youth in Europe!
Music on troubled grounds
Wade in the water: Singing for social change 

World Forum on Music: Youth delegate meetings

During the World Forum on Music there were two meetings organised specifically for youth delegates to get to know each other and work together on the future of the Youth Advisory Group of the IMC (YAG).
The first was an informal get together on Sunday 25th September in Von Krahl Baar featuring a performance by the Estonian Vocal Group Chillin, the best vocal ensemble at the International Choir Festival Tallinn 2011.

Then on Monday 26th September there was a more formal meeting attended by around 25 youth delegates in the Estonian Academy for Music and Theatre. Participants shared their experiences of youth participation (or lack of it!) in their work and studies and shared ideas on the future aims and activities of the Youth Advisory Group (YAG).

At another impromptu meeting held later in the week an interim committee was elected with a chairperson, vice-chairperson and secretary to bring the YAG forward and prepare for the next meeting of the YAG in January 2012.

Cultural and Youth Policy Workshops UNESCO

From 4-7 December 2011, seven young people from Estonia, Germany, Sweden, Turkey and the UK participated in a workshop on cultural and youth policies, which was organised by the IMC, the European Music Council (EMC) and IMC’s Youth Advisory Group (YAG).

Participants of the workshop were offered the opportunity to attend two different sets of meetings at UNESCO as observers:
• a formal meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, including an exchange session between State Parties to the 2005 Convention and civil society
• International NGO Day at UNESCO

Introductions to UNESCO documents e.g. the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions as well as interviews and personal meetings with other NGO representatives and UNESCO staff members made the formal meetings a lively experience for the participants.

 The MEGY project culminated at the 2nd European Forum on Music "Transcending Boundaries – Building Bridges" in Istanbul, Turkey, April 22-24 2012. More information about this event can be found here.

The Forum included a youth-led session entitled Bridging generations in employment: how to get young feet on the music working ladder?

Taking into account various aspects of the music sector, this session aimed at discovering successful approaches for young people taking their first steps in the professional world. This session is was targetted at:
• young music professionals facing their first  career steps
• music organisations dealing with young people
• music organisations wanting to rejuvenate their staff

MEGY in China: International Yehudi Menuhin Competition

Youth chamber orchestra at the Menuhin Competition in Beijing: promotion of dialogue between young Chinese and European musicians

The 2012 edition of the International Yehudi Menuhin Competition competition was held in the Central Conservatory of China in Beijing (for information in Chinese please see the following link: http://www.ccom.edu.cn/news/) from 6 to 15 April. As part of the MEGY project, a youth chamber orchestra was created bringing together pupils from the Menuhin School in the United Kingdom and pupils of the Middle School of the Central Conservatory in Beijing. The musicians (around twenty in total, aged roughly 12-18) spent five days rehearsing together. They performed at the Forbidden City Concert Hall and accompanied the junior finalists in their renditions of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.

At the end of the first day, a special exchange session helped break the ice between the musicians and get them to reflect upon the cultural exchange that was taking place. This session was followed by many informal gatherings throughout the event.

Through rehearsing, performing and talking together, these young people used the common medium of music to foster intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding, and to ensure the future development of these ties.
