Contemporary music on the radio to be highlighted in Lisbon

Paris, May 27, 2010 -
From May 31 to June 4, the International Music Council organises, in cooperation with Portuguese Radio, the 57th International Rostrum of Composers. The event will be hosted by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon.

The 2010 Rostrum will gather representatives from 34 national radio networks from four continents, which present some 70 works composed within the five years preceding the Rostrum. Finnish Radio Executive Producer Heikki Valsta will chair the sessions. After the listening sessions, the assembly of delegates will select and recommend the most important works in two categories: general and "young composers". These and other works will be presented in concerts and broadcast after the Rostrum by the participating and other interested radio stations. The results will be announced on June 4 at 15:00 at a press conference to held at the Gulbenkian Foundation. One of the most important projects in promoting contemporary creation in music via radio broadcasting for over 50 years, the Rostrum has been fulfilling an additional mission since the launch of a new formula in 2003: to become a forum for professional exchange among radio music producers. Still, its central purpose, supported closely by the European Broadcasting Union, is to provide contemporary musical creations the largest possible number of broadcasts worldwide. For instance, the works presented at the 2009 Rostrum received over 450 broadcasts by the participating radio networks as well as by other broadcasting organizations; the 2009 selected works in the two categories were broadcast by as many as 28 radios.

Pursuing its aim to respond to delegates’ professional interests and needs, the Rostrum’s listening sessions will this year again be complemented by a workshop, which will be an exceptional opportunity for knowledge sharing and capacity building.
