The World Federation of Amateur Orchestras was founded in 1997 to promote global youth orchestra initiatives. Since, it has expanded this mission to include both youth and adult amateur orchestras.

WFAO and the non-profit association AIMA -Associazione Italiana Musicisti Amatori- decided to organize in Milan an Amateur Orchestra Festival at the occasion of the 2015 World Expo in partnership with the prestigious MiTo Settembre Musica and the Conservatorio di musica “G. Verdi” who offered their full support to promote WFAO’s festival.

Between the 17th and 20th September, more than 90 amateur musicians from 17 different countries, assembled in Milan under the baton of conductors Joe Yamaji (Japan) and Mario Gioventù (Italy), with Elena Ponzoni as concertmaster.
During the 4 days of rehearsals and social gatherings, all participants shared a great experience and new international friendships were born. They had the chance to perform the final concert at the legendary Conservatorio di Musica “G. Verdi”. The Italian soprano Federica Vitali opened the concert with arias by Pucini, followed by Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2. It was a real success and the audience appreciated the result of the hard work provided by these musicians.

Furthermore, the World Amateur Orchestra festival became the launching platform for a new Italian amateur orchestras association, called FedIOrAm- Italian Federation of Amateur Orchestras. It will replace AIMA as the official representative for amateur musical activities in Italy.
