IMC at Mondiacult 2022

The UNESCO World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development – MONDIACULT 2022 will be convened by UNESCO forty years after the first Mondiacult World Conference on Cultural Policies held in Mexico City (Mexico) in 1982. It will be hosted from 28 to 30 September 2022 by the Government of Mexico in Mexico City.

In our restless effort to bring the voice of our members  and the #FiveMusicRights to the table of decision makers at the highest political level, the IMC Team will be in Mexico to follow the conference and represent the global music ecosystem.

Moreover, in the framework of our participation in a series of international actions and campaigns highlighting the role of culture in sustainable development, IMC is involved in the following side events:

27 September 2022 | Shaping a Culture Goal in the Post-2030 Sustainable Agenda

2.00 – 5.00 PM (GMT-5)

Venue: Anfiteatro Simón Bolívar, Colegio de San Ildefonso, Mexico City

Alongside other global cultural networks, IMC has ongoingly advocated for the role of culture in sustainable development in its #Culture2030Goal campaign. The #Culture2030goal campaign calls for recognising culture as the fourth pillar of sustainable development and advocates for mainstreaming culture across the global development agenda. The campaign also aims to include culture as a distinct goal in the post-2030 development framework.

MONDIACULT 2022 is focused on culture and sustainable development policies. Yet for all that we in the culture sector know the difference we make, it remains the case that culture is under-valued and under-appreciated at the level of the key global policy roadmap – the UN’s 2030 Agenda. This side event will present and discuss a Zero-draft of a future Culture Goal, as prepared by major global cultural networks, working together through the Culture 2030 Goal campaign. Based on expert inputs and a survey of actors across the field, the draft Goal will allow for a new focus in efforts to ensure that culture takes its place at the heart of development planning.

Register for this public event here and share it with your members and colleagues in Mexico.

28 September 2022 | From Policy to Practice: The Role of Culture in the 2030 Agenda and Beyond

(Official MONDIACULT 2022 side event)

3:00 – 4:00 PM (GMT-5)

Venue: Los Pinos, Cencalli, second floor

To contribute to a better understanding of the linkages between policy and practice, this side event will present two outcomes. On the policy side, a Zero-draft of a future Culture Goal, prepared by #Culture2030goal campaign will be presented. The draft allows for a new focus to ensure that culture is placed at the heart of development planning.

In terms of practice, a new #CultureForSDGs Toolkit that acts as a practical guide to the UN’s SDGs for Cultural Institutions and Organizations in Canada will be presented.

29 September 2022 | Responding to the climate emergency: new imperatives for cultural policy

(Official MONDIACULT 2022 side event)

2:00 PM – 3:00 PM (GMT-5)

Venue: Los Pinos, Cencalli

IMC is also member of the #CultureHeritage Network and in this framework, has recently signed an Open Letter to Ministers of Culture of UNESCO Member and Observer States calling for an ambitious vision for how cultural policy can help people imagine and realise low carbon, just, climate resilient futures; and achieve climate resilient sustainable development.

The twin climate change and biodiversity crises are defining challenges of our time. Responding to them requires comprehensive treatment of climate change in cultural policy - and of culture and heritage in climate policy.

This side event seeks to advance understanding of how cultural policies can best help tackle these global challenges, and to build consensus as to priorities. It builds upon a debate entitled "Cultural infrastructures as Drivers of people-centered climate action" that was held in March 2022 as part of the Resiliart process set up by UNESCO to provide inputs into MondiaCult 2022, the UNESCO World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development.

Please also note that the two official side events will be streamed by UNESCO. Check the official Mondiacult website for more information.

Otherwise, rest assured that we’ll do our best to put a spotlight on the #FiveMusicRights, as we have been doing since the founding of IMC in 1949.
