The love and loss in Purcell's operatic masterpiece, Dido and Aeneas, will be familiar territory for opera fans: Dido, recently widowed, falls in love with Aeneas, a Trojan prince. Their royal marriage is disrupted by evil witches, and when Aeneas mistakenly leaves for Italy, Dido kills herself in his absence.
