Taylor Swift urges fans to vote against “fear-based extremism” as she continues political activism

"We want leadership, not fear-based extremism"

Taylor Swift has continued her intervention into US politics, urging fans to vote against “fear-based extremism” in the upcoming US mid-term elections.

The star, who recently broke years of political silence to back the Democrats, has doubled down on her support for Tennessee Senate candidate Phil Bredesen.

Posting on Instagram, she shared a photo of herself and mother Andrea posing alongside a banner that reiterated their support for Bredesen.

“These two Tennessee women voted for the candidate who has proven himself to be reasonable and trustworthy,” the singer wrote.

“We want leadership, not fear-based extremism. Early voting goes til Thursday and Election Day is November 6. Please don’t sit this one out.”

Her latest show of support for Bredesen comes after she first endorsed him on Instagram earlier this month. The emotional post came just two years after she faced criticism for not speaking out against Donald Trump’s election in 2016.

“I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country. I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights”, Swift wrote at the time.

“Any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent.”

In turn, the endorsement angered members of the alt-right online. As reported by The New Statesman, Notorious alt-right chat-forum 4-chan proved to be extremely upset about the change.

“Goodbye Tay”, “They took her from us”, “She was supposed to be our girl!” and “Why did she break our hearts?” were among the many hundreds of posts that have appeared in the forum.

Swift’s post received widespread praise, including the support of former rival Katy Perry.
